Lagavulin distillery was founded in 1816, and the rich, smokey and elegant whiskies produced are a firm favourite of connoisseurs and collectors. Boasting an unmistakably Islay style, Lagavulin is the most heavily-peated of the southern Islay malts and is matured exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels, accentuating its uncompromising smokey, salty character. A much sought-after single malt, this 16 year old release is Lagavulin’s flagship release and a benchmark whisky for the island of Islay. Stunningly complex and pronounced on the nose, a range of aromas are suggested including toffee, marmalade, sweet spices, vanilla, butter and smoke. Full-bodied and uncompromising in the mouth, this incredibly concentrated dram is powerfully peaty and oaky, with underlying notes of grass, cereal and dried fruit. Distinctive and delicious, this iconic release is seriously recommended enough for fans of masculine and smoky whiskies.
